How We Grow Our Plants

Whilst some clones of some Cyclamen species are self fertile, others require encouragement to set seed or require cross pollination with another clone in order for fertilisation to take place. In these cases and where specific crosses are required, hand pollination is either required or improves the quantity of seed set.
Seed capsules are collected just before they split open .....
... and placed in open saucers awaiting cleaning. The cleaned seed is then kept in open dishes where there is a good air flow in order to minimise the risk of moulds growing whilst it waits to be soaked in water for about 24 hours. After this time the seeds have swollen a little and are removed from the water and allowed to dry slightly to facilitate sowing.
Whilst small quantities of seed are sown in deep trays, where larger quantities are available, particularly of the more common species or cultivars, these are space-sown in seed beds.
The seedlings are grown on in their seed beds for 2 to 3 years (depending upon species) until they reach flowering size.
When they reach sales size, in early summer they are potted in 3 inch pots, covered in grit and placed on the sales benches ready for the coming season.
